What Day Is It? Day 9

I was going to take it easy today. It started off that way, and then it took a turn, lol.

Stitched or Still-in-Progress

I have a couple FOs to share – one that I forgot to post the other day when I finished it, and the other I bound off this afternoon! Both patterns are by Laura Nelkin.

Pattern: Cordillia by Laura Nelkin; yarn: I need to find out; knit on US2 (2.75mm)
Pattern: Ceci Cowl by Laura Nelkin (exclusive to the cruise attendees – look for it in October); yarn: HUANACO Merino de la Patagonia Single in Noche en le Quebrada (violet) and Paso del Liquen (gray) on US 5 (3.75mm) and US4 (3.5mm) needles

Travel Tales

And here’s the long story… We arrived at Punta Arenas, Chile, this morning. I had planned to take it easy and stay on board the ship since I hadn’t booked an excursion. A lot of folks in our group had booked a tour to Magdalena Island where the penguins are. But the cruise tours were sold out, and I really wasn’t comfortable spending the money when I’d already had an amazing penguin experience. But when I went for breakfast, I happened upon Laura sitting alone. I joined her and grabbed my light meal for the morning. She was planning to go walking, particularly to check out the city overlook and a yarn shop.

Having seen the brief intro to the port (to decide if it was worth my energy), I filled her in on a couple other sites she might be interested. She invited me to join her, and I agreed. After all, it would only take about 60-90 minutes to walk the circuit, and I wanted to get more walking in. We agreed to meet to take a tender in to the pier, and by about 11:45AM we were on our way!

Cerro La Cruz gives a great view of the city

From here, we headed north while making our way downhill, heading to see Monumento al Ovejero (Monument to the Shepherd). Along the way, we were walking through some lovely residential areas plus some shopping blocks.

When we finally got to the statue… it was surrounded by fencing – apparently the park area is under construction.

Making our way back toward the port, we decided to stop in to the Sara Braun Cemetery (Cementario Municipal). Sara was a key figure in the story of this city, and she bequeathed this property to the city for the cemetery. The grounds are gorgeous, and there are some notable local families interred here.

By the time we made it back to the port, we’d walked about 5.5 miles, and I had a bit of a blister (ugh). The weather turned after I returned to the ship (rain was forecast to begin around 2pm), and eventually we got a beautiful rainbow to add to the enjoyment of the day.

After I bound off my cowl, I headed to the spa for my mani-pedi followed by dinner on the Lido Deck. My body certainly appreciated the rest! I returned to the Crow’s Nest for a bit before Knit Night.

We have three lovely sea days coming up before we can step on land again. I’m looking forward to lots of knitting time!

Knit on. 🧶

I am so relieved you got off the ship and explored the area. I’m sure with the upcoming days stuck on the ship you’d have kicked yourself for not getting off when you could. Or maybe I’m projecting as I certainly would. In me world of wool spinning adventure there was some yarn called Punta Arenas

Ha! I’m glad you feel better since I did go ashore. 😘 There are a number of “Punta Arenas” in the world, and a colleague at work said he’d been to one in the Caribbean. I wonder if the yarn you speak of is from Chile. We didn’t see local yarn on our walk though.
