I had a very short night of sleep as the morning began with an exciting experience to start the day!
Travel Tales
As scheduled, we arrived in the vicinity of the Pio XI (Brüggen) Glacier by 7:30AM. I threw on my layers of clothing to get out there before sunrise. It was a very crowded deck for a while – and it’s downright annoying how many people choose to ignore the directive to NOT stand on anything (like benches – or the railing at the edge of the bow!). I felt bad for the poor woman from ship security who had the task of rebuking and stopping that bad behavior, time and time again.

Anyway, the sun rose and the glacier grew more beautiful, and the ship crept closer. It was honestly more impressive the closer we got. With that proximity, we could make out much greater dimension throughout along with the range of blues throughout the glacier. Seriously amazing.

Of course, it was chilly on deck, but fortunately there wasn’t a great deal of wind to make it even colder. We also had the activities director, Ed, giving us sporadic narration about the glacier’s history. Fun fact: the bluer the ice, the older it is. And the older ice is under an incredible amount of pressure. There were a couple calving events as I stood there, but I didn’t get to see them. The first was when the bow was crowded with people; during the second, I was simply looking in the opposite direction.

Naturally, I took a lot of photos (over 100 between my phone and DSLR). I chatted briefly with another passenger who remarked about how easy that is to do these days – back when we shot on film, it would’ve been quite expensive, and we’d have to wait at least an hour to know if we got any decent pictures. Ah, technological advances can be a blessing.

There wasn’t a lot else to speak of today, though we had some events with Laura’s group. I missed the first attempt at a group photo on the Sea View deck – after breakfast, I went to my stateroom for a nap, waking up at the time the photo session was to take place. Thankfully it was less than ideal, so the group repeated the activity in the middle of our full-group teaching session. Participants were given the opportunity to come forward and share a tip/trick that could benefit other knitters.
We also had an all-group dinner spotlighting folks’ “signature color.” I sported a red blouse and skirt. There’s a good chance I’ll break out the same outfit for Good Friday next month.
Still no knitting photos to share – I was just too tired today. But I did finish the second sock! Tomorrow should be better for knitting content photos. Now, I’m getting to bed early.
Knit on. 🧶
