Struggles and Successes and YOP Week 28

Sigh – it’s been a long week, and I’ve struggled with sleep, waking up at 2AM on several days, unable to get back to sleep. Hopefully this week is better. At least I managed to accomplish a few things!

Stitched or Still-in-Progress

Last week I shared my New Year’s cast-on project, and that’s my primary focus in limited knitting time. It’s over one-third complete, and I’m well on track to complete it by the Super Bowl. I just started working on the tenth mini, so it’s not very visible here.

Pattern: ADVENTuresome Wrap by Ambah O’Brien; yarn: Yarn Cafe Creations Biscotti Sock Fingering Weight in 2026 Advent calendar (MC: As You Wish; New CCs: Dread Pirate Roberts, I’m not left-handed either, Inconceivable, I do not think it means what you think it means, Inigo Montoya, Have fun storming’ da castle); on US 5 (3.75mm) needles

On Sundays it seems easiest for me to work on the bling-laden scarf. The pattern is quite simple, so it’s suitable for football knitting. But I still have to monitor my place within the pattern repeats. I should be able to finish this one by the Super Bowl as well, and then I can cast on the alternate color kit I bought.

Pattern: Blingola Scarf by Laura Nelkin; yarn: Pascuali Puno Winikunka in color #74 (green) and Blingola by Lola’s Choice on US7 (4.5mm) needles

And lastly, I managed a few rounds on my vanilla sock during my visit to the theater (more on that later). I still have plenty of mindless knitting to go before I start on the gusset increases.

Pattern: SHaGS by Sarah Jordan; yarn: Good Noodle Yarn Co Everyday Sock in Are You Ready For Some Football? On US1 (2.25mm) needles

Cast-on Conversations

I have two small projects I need to cast on this week. I’m very late in completing a test knit, and I’ll be knitting up a couple dishcloths for the NFL pool I’m in. Look for one or two pictures here next week!

Grandson Glimpses

Just a quick note here about the munchkin – now that the family is all here, his schedule is sadly erratic. Mama started working this week, and that’s messed with his emotions along with his sleep schedule. He doesn’t nap consistently which complicates matters. In general, though, he just fights sleep most of the time. The best day he had this week was probably Friday because I managed to get him to take a nap at midday. When it was time for him to go to bed, he said he didn’t want to, but there was no screaming or crying or general toddler meltdown. On Saturday, he skipped the nap and then fell asleep in my lap on the couch while I was watching football.

Today I took him to the basement to see what was in Daddy’s childhood toy box – a giant football. His curiosity was piqued by this Playskool race car that has screws holding everything together that can be easily removed.

Environment Evolution

I had a couple focused sessions this week, tackling areas that need a lot of help. First, I took my first pass at the hall closet – or at least the top four shelves. I filled up a box with donations as well as removing lots of trash. The big success here was having easy access to the bath towels! I’ve been cramming them in anywhere I could find room and that tactic wasn’t working! I also consolidated my collection of light bulbs.

Before| Better – after this photos was taken, I also emptied out the bottom space. No more album collection! Cleaning supplies are more accessible, too. I’ll make another pass here soon to declutter even more!

On Saturday, I packed my car with recyclables and all the donations I’ve set aside recently; then I made the rounds to the recycling center and Goodwill. Every thing I can remove from the house gives me a little more room to breathe. One of my challenges this week has been maintaining my effort to keep my personal items confined to my bedroom and office – after two decades of having the space all to myself, this isn’t an easy transition.

Lastly for this segment, I got a lovely surprise this week when a pair of gents showed up at my door to inform me that they were going to be cutting down the neighbor’s tree that hangs over my backyard and garage. This has been one of the biggest detriments to my enclosed space back there – the tree would drop all kinds of nastiness into the yard, and its seed pods would bang on my backyard door. Worst of all, the droppings would collect in the gutter on my garage. This spring, we’ll get to do a wonderful clean-up back there! They also provided us with a bit of entertainment as they worked to reduce the tree to finish off in the neighbor’s yard.

I won’t feel like I’m fighting a losing battle now when I clean out that gutter and clean off the roof!

Tail Talk

Although River continues to be skittish about anyone walking near her, she is approaching nearly everyone in the house for petting now. And this week she even let my grandson pet her a bit! That was a huge breakthrough! I was also pleasantly surprised to see her using the munchkin’s easy chair several times as a bed. These are the only times since she came to my house that I’ve seen her get off the floor. My son said she’s slept on the recliner as well, though I have no evidence of this claim.

Soundscape Sessions

I was finally able to get to the latest production in our Broadway tour line-up on my subscriber night! Now that our church choir has a director, I can kick back on occasional Thursdays to see the show rather than scrambling to exchange my ticket for another night. This month’s entertainment was Back to the Future: The Musical. The technical effects in this show are pretty impressive, including a flying car! A number of plot points from the movie were adapted to better suit a stage production, and a number of songs were added as well. Overall, I enjoyed it very much.

Places You Can Knit… I didn’t make a lot of progress on the sock because I was enjoying the show a lot!

I think I had a couple other things to share, but at this point, I’m way too tired… If I remember later, I’ll share in a separate post. If I don’t, then it obviously wasn’t that important, lol.

Knit on. 🧶

I made an Adventuresome shawl a few years ago and found the finished length unbearable, so I cut a section out and kitchenered it back together. Just flagging as you may want to try it on once it gets quite long to see whether you really want that many sections.

This being a wrap rather than a traditional shawl, I’m expecting it to be bigger. I’ve knit a couple other wraps that are large, and in winter here that’s very helpful. This one might actually be smaller than the others I’ve made since it uses less than half of each mini. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Your wrap is beautiful! Lots of changes for grandson again. No wonder you two aren’t sleeping. It will take some time to adjust.

Thank you. Yes, there are challenges with inconsistent schedules… I do my best to provide him with consistency where I can. Last night, I had a solid night of sleep as did he, as he slept in his crib instead of with his sister upstairs. While he puts up a fight in toddler fashion, I’m usually able to diffuse his tirades pretty quickly. 😉 It’s reminded me of when he was a newborn and would sleep most soundly on my chest, possibly because I was the calmest person in the room. 🥰

What pretty projects. I can’t imagine going from a household of one to a household of four. Best wishes as you continue to declutter and new routines are established.
