Year of Projects – week 18

This will be a knitting-only post since I have a podcast episode and post coming up later this week (with happy news).

Stitched or Still-in-Progress

I have one FO from last week, the Desert Vista Dyeworks socks were done before the end of the month! I’ve had challenges recently so that wasn’t the standard for a while. Hopefully I’m trending toward a cushion of time.

SHaGS – pattern by Sarah Jordan, yarn: Desert Vista Dyeworks Viso in colorway Chang’e Mei Moon Goddess on US1 (2.25mm)

I made solid progress on the sweater so I was able to join the sections under the arms. This does mean very long rows with a bunch of charts. But progress is motivating!

Citadel sweater – pattern by Joji Locatelli; using Blarney Woolen Mills Donegal Tweed Handknitting Wool in Moss on US 6 (4.0mm) needles
Twisted Tea Shorts by Briana Luppino, yarn: Knit Picks Hawthorne Fingering Speckle in the Specimen colorway, Cloudborn Fibers Merino Superwash Sock Twist in Scarlet and Shaela Heather; knit on US4 (3.5mm) and US5 (3.75mm) needles

Cast-on Conversations

Last week I shared the yarn mini set I bought for a test knit, but I can’t share photos of that project until the pattern is released. Based on our due date for the project with feedback, it should be released around the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday at the end of this month.

Since I finished the DVD socks before the end of the month, I needed some easy-peasy knitting for the last couple days. So, I cast on another pair of socks. I’ll share some of the relevance of this yarn for me in my next podcast post.

SHaGS – pattern by Sarah Jordan, yarn: Fibernymph Dye Works Bounce in colorways Green Dragon (MC) and Brandywine Blue (CC) on US1 (2.25mm)

November started, and so did my next pair of DVD socks! This is now my twentieth pair in this pattern, so I finally decided to make a spreadsheet to track my completion percentage more accurately. 🤓 The only variations I make periodically are to change the number of rounds of leg and ribbing, but I have a standard target. I also worked out what the percentages are if I knit them two-at-a-time, though I don’t do that often anymore.

SHaGS – pattern by Sarah Jordan, yarn: Desert Vista Dyeworks Viso in colorway Brace Yourself (MC) and a neutral CC on US1 (2.25mm)

And finally, I frogged the Advent Calendar blanket I had been attempting. I mentioned last week that the blanket wasn’t bringing me any joy or relaxation, so it wasn’t worth continuing. Yesterday I cast on a shawl that I previously test knit for the designer. (I haven’t finished the test knit, lol, but it’s about two-thirds done.) Because of how the blanket was worked, breaking the yarn repeatedly, I started with less than half of C1, so I’m going to add in the MC from the blanket to make up the difference. What’s particularly nice is that I was able to make a copy of my original KnitCompanion project to start the new one.

Fade Into Advent – pattern by Lisa K. Ross (Paper Daisy Creations), yarn: Canon Hand Dyes Bruce Yak Merino Fingering in the Bridgerton Advent Calendar set of colors; on US5 (3.75mm) needles

I’m also looking at least one more cast-on for this month. In the Down Cellar Studio Pigskin Party, the November challenge is to create something that has buttons on it. They can be decorative or functional. I’m leaning toward knitting the Easy Sock Yarn Ponytail Hat (Rav link) by Lena Matthison, as she’s a sponsor designer.

This is a Year of Projects post. Officially the Group is in its 14th year, my first. If you would like to find out more about the Year of Projects Group on Ravelry, please check it out; it’s a very welcoming group!

Knit on! 🧶

Thank you so much! I’m even looking at bumping up to twice a month, though perhaps not until the new year, given the chaos of the holiday season. 😘

Definitely best to frog something you aren’t enjoying making. Who are all these socks for? 20 pairs is a lot, I’m assuming you give away a lot. Your DVD stash of stripy yarn must be running low now. I’m afraid I’ve struggled listening to a podcast about things I’d like to see what is being talked about. Any chance of you moving to YouTube or do you must want to be audio?

I’m not considering a YouTube channel or vlog any time soon…maybe once my house (or main floor, at least) is done. I do share pictures in my show notes, though. I’m trying to work out a link directly to the show notes within the episode description.

As for the socks, they are mostly for me. Winters are cold here, so I like a variety of sock options, and the colors bring me joy during the gray winter days. I also use the Yarn Harlot darning method to deal with socks with holes: say “darn” as I throw them away. 😉 I had collected my first two years of DVD socks back in the spring and tossed 4 or 5 pairs.

Yes, this month’s is my last full skein of DVD yarn, though I’ve earned credit to order another one plus the 30% coupon from Q3. That’s one of the reasons why my December socks will be scrappy, knit from the multitude of remnants I have from the nearly-five years I’ve completed the club.
